Thought I'd throw up a link to my pal (and co-worker) James Dulce's website, a talented young designer based out of Geelong. He's got great taste in hip hop, always wears fresh kicks and is just an all-round cool kid. Check out some of his stuff below...

Zombie Comics
Saturday, 21 August, 2010

Another logo for some more good friends of mine, Nicky and Tristan, who're opening up a store soon selling comics/graphic novels, toys, t-shirts and the likes. They asked me to come up with some designs, this is the one they went with...

This was a blast to work on - I love any reason to draw a zombie/horde of zombies. This sketch (left) is another option I gave them that I thought worked well so thought I'd post it up here too.

The website's still being built but keep an eye out as they'll be taking orders within the next month or so! www.zombiecomics.com.au. Stickers and t-shirts are being made up too!

Robot Army Media
Thursday, 19 August, 2010

Here's a logo I made for my friend Ryan Chamley's new digital media company. I've known Ryan for what must be like 10 years now through the Geelong music scene, back when he was in No Plan B with Damo. Our bands played shows together and both being guitar players, we were always borrowing amps off each other - he helped me fit a Marshall 4x12 into the back of my vw fastback a few times over the years.

It's always cool seeing your friend's creative projects come up and Chammers is one dude who always has something on the go, usually a band or two and over the past few years his video production work has really taken off... Check out what they're up to at www.robotarmymedia.com.

Edit
I just updated my links page!!

Geelong Roller Derby
Friday, 6 August, 2010

Earlier this year I was asked by the lovely Riff Raff Saff from the Geelong Roller Derby League to draw a poster to commemorate the 2010 season of two of the league's teams, the Atom Bombs and The Psychotics...

Roller Derby is a predominantly female sport, but GRDL invites guys to skate at certain bouts (I think they even have a men's league) so they asked for one of the skaters to be male and this is the rough draft I came up with. I redrew and cleaned the illustration up for the final poster, but it's essentially unchanged from this first sketch.

This was really a lot of fun to work on and the prints came out way better than I imagined - these really do look nicer irl than they do on screen!

We've printed these in a limited edition of 300 and so far they're ONLY available at bouts... and the Grand Final just happens to be on next Sunday 15th August at the Leisuretime Centre in Bell Post Hill, featuring these two teams!
Any posters left over from the game will be available to buy online from the GRDL website and I'll try to get a few to sell right here, but be quick as we won't be printing any more of these once they're gone!

  • Limited edition of 300
  • Signed & numbered by the artist
  • Digital prints on heavy stock paper (300gsm)
  • $15

  • They're not in this poster, but I can't forget to mention the other upcoming GRDL team, The Bloody Marys!! More Roller Derby merch and new art coming soon.

    The Human Electric/Escape To Oz
    Wednesday 21 July, 2010

Hey! Getting behind with the updates again! Things have really been busy the past two months and doing actual work has taken precedence over updating this site unfortunately. At least I've got things to blog about though, right?

Here's something I did a little while ago but I haven't showed it until now because the guys have just updated their Myspace with some new songs and this new layout to match. The band asked me to come up with something that reflected the name The Human Electric, so I had the idea of these dark figures invading houses through electricity/power lines. Pretty simple, but they liked the idea so I knocked this drawing out and then went to town colouring in Photoshop.

Myspace layout by Blk Heart Designs

Oh, if the above image looks familiar, I showed a snippet here a few months back. Years ago I used to haaate drawing backgrounds, things like houses and buildings used to drive me crazy, but now they're one of my favourite things to illustrate. I'm not sure when or how that turnaround happened but I'm glad it did, haha.
I also drew some portraits of the guys. They've got a few shows coming up around Melbourne/Geelong too, check 'em out if you're in the area!

This next piece is poster I did for the upcoming All-Ages Escape to Oz tour for Melbourne band House vs Hurricane. Another fun job brief, but not a lot of time to work on this one... they basically wanted a hardcore Dorothy in Oz with a hurricane tearing shit up in the background. Here's the final piece, 100% vector.

Some working images.. I wanted Dorothy to look like she'd just landed on the yellow brick road from dropping out of the hurricane, so I with that in mind the composition was pretty easy to work out. My first attempt at her design was to modernise her into a hardcore farm-grrl with a bit of a 'could-kick-your-ass' vibe. I put her in cut-off jeans, a blue plaid shirt, and gave her Oz-themed tattoos and some red Vans slip-ons instead of ruby slippers. You can barely see it in this sketch but she's also rocking a 'Dark Side of The Moon' belt buckle. ;)

They wanted to go with a more feminine looking Dorothy, so I changed her back into a dress, kept the robot/tinman, scarecrow and lion tattoos and then it was just a matter of tracing it all in Illustrator and laying down some colour. I was a little bit out of my comfort zone with this one, I think I'll always prefer a pen/pencil over a mouse/tablet but it's nice to change things up once in a while, force yourself to think and work in different ways.

Ha, an odd thing about this job is as soon as I took it on, just about every movie I had on in the background while working on it had a Wizard of Oz reference in it, then the actual movie was on TV last week.

I'll be posting more new work in the next few days, gonna get back on this updatin' thanggg. Thanks to everyone who continues to visit despite the sporadic updating!!

    Lost Cause
    Monday 14 June, 2010

So this update is waaaay delayed, but THANK YOU to all who came out to the 'Jac, Jess & The Cat' Art Show not too long ago in Geelong! The opening night was a success and I sincerely hope everyone who came out on the night had as much fun as I did and were happy with the pieces they went home with! Unfortunately none of us putting on the show remembered to take photos on the night, so all I've got is some kind of blurry shots of my walls taken before/after the opening.

Here's a few shots of the cityscape piece titled Miles To Go. This was snapped up early and taken home by the buyer, so I think a few people missed out on seeing this one. Acrylic and paint pens on wood panel, approx. 4 foot wide x 1 foot high.

Also at the art show was the launch of my third self-published mini-comic Lost Cause. Each book contains 28 pages of comics, drawings, sketches and designs from the past year or so, with a heavy card-stock cover. All lovingly photocopied, cut, folded, stapled and numbered by myself, with a bit of help at the nth hour from my partner in crime, Rick. Thanks man!

I originally printed 50, but then upped the edition to 100 which means I've got a few left over and I'm making them available here on my site for you. My last two mini's (Versus vol. 1 & 2) are now sold out, so be quick on this one - they're strictly a limited edition and I won't be printing any more once they're gone. If you'd like to get your hands on one, purchasing details are below...

For those in the Melbourne area, Lost Cause is also stocked with the good people down at Sticky Institute in the Degraves St Subway in the CBD.

I've also got a few prints left over from the show which will be up for grabs on the site soon. The online store is finally underway - launching soon!

    Busy busy busy!
    Tuesday 2 March, 2010
For the last few months I've been chipping away at making a website for my good friend (and co-exhibitor!) Jessie Riches and today I finally got it up online.. with a few things missing, but online nonetheless! She's got some pretty amazing work and I'm stoked to be in a show with her later this month. Check out her work here...
    .

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a bit of a film nut. If I'm not listening to music while I'm drawing, I've got a dvd on in the background and it's not unusual that i'll get through 3-4 films in a day. Back in high school I stopped taking art classes in year 10, partly because I was frustrated with the art teachers, but also so i could take media/film studies instead.
And because I can rarely afford to buy any comics or art books these days, movies are where I get a lot of my inspiration. I mean it's pretty damn easy to find a movie with awesome cinematography, lighting, characters, dialogue, pacing etc to take inspiration from. Anyway, to the point, here's some fanart I drew from one of my favourite 80's thrillers that I watch all the time, 'Flatliners'. The meanest little kid back from the dead to kick your ass; Billy Mahoney....

I'd like to do a whole series of drawings of my fav movie characters/scenes one day. I'll just add that to my already massive list of things to do.
Here are a couple of 10 minute sketches I did in February. I spend a lot of time on or waiting for public transport..

And finally, I've made a new mini-comic that I'll be launching at our art show at the end of this month (see the entry below for deets). It's a 28-page, black & white, self-published little book called 'Lost Cause', containing my 2010 Hourly Comic Day effort, the 'Daily Ride' comic I did this time last year, and some designs and sketches - some of which you haven't seen! I've printed an edition of 50, and if I have any left after the show I'll sell them here. Preview pics coming soon!
